Sustainable Tourism Program Molds Vision For Placencia Point Development

Residents of the Placencia Village gathered at the Placencia Community Center on Wednesday, August 26th, 2009 as the Sustainable Tourism Program Team, BTB, Ministry of Tourism, Civil Aviation and Culture, and the Placencia Village Council invited participation from the public to expand on the concept of a new pier and plaza for Placencia Point.

Placencia is one of the many tourist destinations that visitors stop by in Belize to experience. The general consensus during the meeting was that the village needs a public pier, and the community is inclined towards a development option which combines both a multi-purpose pier with a shoreline development in keeping with the traditional village setting.

Project financing for the pier will cost US $1.2 million which is being provided by the Government of Belize through an IDB loan of US$13.322 million with counterpart funding from the BTB as part of the Sustainable Tourism Program

Present at the meeting were Mrs. Tracy Panton, Director of Tourism, Mr. Michael Singh, CEO Ministry of Tourism, Civil Aviation & Culture, Mr. Brian Yearwood, Chairman of the Placencia Village Council, Mr. Gaspar Guerrero, Chairman of the BTB Board of Directors, the Project Team of the Sustainable Tourism Program and members of the Placencia Community.
