Faith Nazarene School Tops 5th Annual Primary School Social Studies Quiz Competition

The Belize Tourism Board held its 5th Annual Primary School Social Studies Quiz Competition on May 29th, 2009 at the Best Western Biltmore Plaza. The competition was geared at children in standards five and six from primary schools throughout the country of Belize. The aim of the competition was to educate the children of Belize about the history, geography, and culture of Belize and to inform them about current events as well as instill civic pride within all concerned.

Each district had two district finalists representing their schools. Participants were given a total of 125 questions to study for the final competition. Master of Ceremonies and Quiz Master, William Arthur Neal, asked a series of social studies questions and at the end of the competition, the winners were:

• Ali Guevara from Faith Nazarene School in the Cayo District who placed first in the competition
• Solomon Dueck from Solid Rock Academy in the Stann Creek District who took second place
• Heidan Sosa from Libertad SDA School in the Corozal District with third place.

First place winner, Ali Guevara, received:

• a 1st place plaque for his school, Faith Nazarene School
• a 1st place trophy
• a framed certificate of participation
• a fully loaded computer system courtesy PACT
• two nights' accommodation for 2 with continental breakfast courtesy Victoria House
• snorkeling for 2 and lunch courtesy Ramon's Village in San Pedro
• two round trip boat transfers to San Pedro courtesy San Pedro Water Taxi
• school bag with stationeries courtesy the Angelus Press
• a gift basket courtesy Grace Kennedy Ltd.

Sponsors for the National 5th Annual Primary School Social Studies Quiz Competition included the Belize Tourism Board, Protected Area Conservation Trust (PACT), Black Orchid Resort, Old Belize Adventure, The Angelus Press Ramon's Village, Jaguar Paw, Victoria House, VIP Wireless, Grace Kennedy Ltd., San Pedro Water Taxi, and Concept Studios.
