Secrets Of El Pilar Explored By American Archaeology Magazine
One of Cayo's sacred Maya sites, El Pilar, was the focus of a four-day familiarization visit to Belize by editor, Mr. Michael Bawaya and photographer, Mr. Jerry Rabinowitz of American Archaeology Magazine in Belize from June 8th-June 11th, 2009.
American Archaeology Magazine is the only popular magazine devoted to the excitement and mystery of archaeology in the United States, with additional coverage in Canada and Latin America. The magazine, published by The Archaeological Conservancy, has a circulation of 225,000; it covers research breakthrough and persistent historical puzzles and explores the historic past of modern-day cities as well as the Conservancy's activities and preservation causes.
The focal point of their trip was to prepare a feature story on The El Pilar Archaeology Reserve, the largest site in the Belize River Area with 25 plazas and hundreds of other edifices covering approximately 120 acres.
Mr. Bawaya and Mr. Rabinowitz's visit was supported by the Institute of Archaeology, the National Institute of Culture and History and the Belize Tourism Board. Participating private sector partners included Cahal Pech Village Resort.
