BTB Lends Supports to South Ambergris Caye Neighborhood Watch

The Minister of Tourism & Civil Aviation, Hon. Manuel Heredia, Jr. and chairman of the Board of Directors of the Belize Tourism Board, Mr. Gaspar Guerrero lent financial support to the efforts of the South Ambergris Caye Neighborhood Watch (SACNW) in the amount of one-thousand dollars. Mr. Terry Colbert, a member of SACNW received the check on behalf of the committee.

This initiative by the SACNW is helping to create awareness on how communities working together can effectively ensure a safe and positive environment for its residents as well as visitors. Citizen actions have included the donation of a small police-substation by Pelican Reef Villas combined with community donations of equipment and, the hiring of several privately employed security officers to assist the local Police Department in daily area patrols. As a model program, they hope to be an example of how ordinary citizens are able to positively influence decision makers and by extension, their communities.

SACNW consists of some 100 members, beginning at Victoria House and extending to the southern tip of the island.

It is hoped that similar initiatives will be undertaken within other areas of the island.
