Caye Caulker Opens its first High School - Ocean Academy Community High School
The Minister of Tourism, Hon. Manuel Heredia Jr., attended an official inauguration and ribbon cutting ceremony held in Caye Caulker on Sunday, August 31st 2008. The ceremony launched the opening of the first high school in Caye Caulker - Ocean Academy Community High School.
This non-profit institution founded by long term residents Heidi Curry, Joni Miller and Dane Dingerson will open to approximately twenty-eight Caye Caulker school children. The vision of Ocean Academy Community High School is to provide excellent primary and secondary education to any child on the island of Caye Caulker regardless of their family's financial ability.
The Ocean Academy consists of three levels of education including primary, secondary and, a newly developed and innovative "bridge class" aimed at capturing "at risk" children who did not complete Standard 6 and/ or the PSE examination. This "bridge class" is also aimed at children who have been out of school for over a year and would like to complete their high school education.
The Board of Directors for the newly opened high school are: Joseph "Skippy" Fuller as Chairman with Heidi Curry, Joni Miller, Nelda Rosado, Alberto Villanueva, Abel Novelo and Dan Dingerson as board members.
