BTB Clarifies US Warden Message

Belize City, Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

In the Channel 5 evening news aired last evening the reporter informed the general public that "The U.S. Embassy has issued a travel advisory to its citizens cautioning travel to Belize, and encouraging them to register at the nearest diplomatic mission and be vigilant to ensure their personal safety. This message on the face of it poses a substantial threat to the country's Tourism Industry. Lloyd Enriquez, Registrar of Hotels with the B.T.B. reacts to the travel advisory."

The Belize Tourism Board would like to clarify that we have contacted a top official within the Embassy and were advised that the Embassy did not issue a Travel Advisory on Belize to their citizens. Instead what was issued was a "Warden Message" which was circulated via email to US citizens, either visiting or living in Belize, who are registered with the US Embassy here in Belize.

A Warden Message is not a Travel Alert and it is not a Travel Warning and basically there is no need for alarm.
